Restaurant & Bar

Restaurant
Our award-winning restaurant offers the best
of British and French Cuisine, and our Head
Chef prides himself on using only the freshest
local ingredients. The Linen Fold, Panelled
Restaurant, with Medieval Artwork by the
Slade School of Art, is an extremely romantic
setting for fine dining.

Luncheon is served from 12.00 noon until 2.30pm, and Dinner from 7.00 pm until 9.30 pm. We offer a Table d’Hote, House Specialities, and full Vegetarian/Vegan Menu. Reservations are always advisable to avoid disappointment. To confirm a reservation on a Saturday night we request either a credit card number to hold on file or written confirmation.

Paddy Burt, Hotel and Restaurant Critic from
the
Telegraph after staying and dining at the
Mermaid wrote: “A great meal in an
atmospheric setting, takes some beating  -
this lady, proves that age and beauty do go
together.”

Giants Fireplace Bar

The Lounge Bar is one of the most fascinating
rooms in the Hotel.   A huge, open, log
fireplace, possibly one of the largest in
England, has a vast beam that spans the whole
width, supported on stone piers.

There is a Priest’s Hole situated in the chimneybreast, used in the days when it was a crime to harbour a Roman Catholic – a warm refuge and a safe one!

Our excellent
Bar Menu is served every day with the exception of Saturday evenings.

Both the Restaurant and Bar are open to non residents and in the summer, guests can relax under the sunshades on the patio.

Our Cellars hold a large selection of wine and our draft beers include “Old Speckled Hen”, “Courage Best”and "London Pride".

The Bar was also, once, the haunt of the infamous Hawkhurst Gang of Smugglers. An eyewitness of the day wrote: “They sat at the windows of this house, carousing and smoking their pipes, with their loaded pistols lying on the table before them, no magistrate daring to interfere”.
